Last week was my birthday, and because I jump at the opportunity to bake, I made my own birthday cupcakes. I just used a boxed cake mix, and I made my favorite frosting, Martha Stewart's Fluffy Vanilla Frosting.
After letting the cupcakes cool completely, I started by frosting 4 cupcakes with the white frosting. I chose to only frost 4 because the cupcake rack I was using has 4 spots on the top tier, 6 in the middle, and 8 on the bottom. After I finished frosting the 4 white cupcakes, I added a drop of red food coloring and mixed my frosting until it was a light pink. Then I frosted 6 more cupcakes with this light pink color. I then added another drop of red food coloring to make a slightly darker pink frosting. I frosted 8 cupcakes with this new color and then added all 18 frosted cupcakes to my cupcake rack.
Next time I use this technique I think I will use a cupcake rack with more tiers so I can do more shades of pink. Of course you can use this technique with any color frosting, just make sure you start with white first and slowly add food coloring. You want to make sure you have a fading effect in your frosting colors.
That's all for now, but check back for another one of my projects soon!
